Willy Bo Richardson’s, first solo exhibition in Mexico.
In his new series “All Yours”, Willy Bo Richardson explores new mediums and materials. Intensely hued waves, rays of light, passages of consonance and dissonance float on the toothless surface of yupo.
Willy Bo Richardson: All Yours
Skot Foreman Gallery
Fábrica la Aurora
Calzada de La Aurora #7A
San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
15 December 2021 – 7 February 2022
Opening Reception December 15, 5 – 9 pm
Richardson’s new expansive paintings are on view for the first time at Skot Foreman Gallery, located the Cultural Center of Art and Design, Fábrica La Aurora. Richardson’s paintings explore the phenomena of light reflection and refraction, and simplified forms of atmospheric elements. Working in watercolor, gouache and airbrushed acrylic, he layers bands of color in space. In paintings like All Yours 13, the waves of color are pared down into undulating ripples of lilac, pink or blue, implying the constant movement of water as it seemingly changes color under the sky.
In All Yours 15, the subtle, near monochromatic palette possesses an ethereal, emotional quality, implying the feeling of peace and calm right before dusk. Other paintings glow like rays of the sun splayed out in a pinwheel of vivid, colorful lines. Their prismatic colors seem to jump off the paper. Richardson states, “Water based media on yupo behaves like steam wafting through the air from a cup of tea. It yields unexpected and constantly changing results.” Richardson first fell in love with Mexico as a foreign exchange student in Oaxaca in 1990. He continues to feel at home in Oaxaca and Mexico City, and is fascinated by the rich cultural and artistic merits and history of Mexico.
This will be the artist’s first visit to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Richardson taught painting and color theory at Santa Fe University of Art and Design from 2009-2016. He was fortunate to teach students in exchange from Universidad del Valle de México. He found their innate graphic sensibility to be totally inspiring and continues a creative dialogue with his former students to this day.
ABOUT SKOT FOREMAN GALLERY
Skot Foreman Fine Art currently operates a newly renovated 4,000 + square foot space in the arts community of San Miguel de Allende in Central México. Additionally, the gallery continues to exhibit at select international art fairs throughout the year.
Exhibitions are arranged at the museum level; in 2006 “Purvis Young: Paintings from the Street” at the Boca Raton Museum of Art broke attendance and catalog sales records for the museum. The gallery inventories an important collection of Young’s work ranging from the early 1970’s through the mid-1990s and presented the artist during the 2019 Venice Biennale at Palazzo Mora on Stada Nova just off the Grand Canal.
The gallery features a wide selection of Modern Masters – Picasso, Warhol, Dali, Siqueiros and Rivera all figure prominently. The work of the late Oaxacan artist Alejandro Santiago (1964-2013) has grown to become an additional area of focus over recent years and the owners believe these works, as currently valued, represent a rare opportunity for their clients and collectors worldwide. Basquiat, Calder and Haring, among others, are additional areas of particular interest.
The gallery continues to assist a number of foundations and museums in its’ efforts to identify works of interest for acquisition and academic research. Scholarly catalogs and writings are published in support of each exhibition.
