From Nüart Gallery Editorial: Artist Spotlight with Willy Bo Richardson
Q: In a few words, how would you describe your work?
A: Humming field of color.
Q: Can you describe your creative process?
A: When I encounter an object of beauty… I do my best to be receptive, to take it in as it wishes. This is my research. Then, at a certain time, I understand how I want to respond. I also know generally which colors I want to use and which direction to take my paintings in. This is how I develop a new series.
When I’m in the middle of a painting, I let space collaborate. I respond to the materials, and their behavior; and I trust the impressions and experiences I’ve collected.
Q: What is most satisfying to you about creating your art?
A: I figured out a way to paint only what I want. Over the years I freed myself from subject matter. I simply want to smooth out materials and play with colors and glaze layers… and I get to do just that!
I use vertical strokes as a negotiation with the limited structure that tethers us to conditioned existence. When I paint, I strive towards freedom.
Q: What has been the highlight of your artistic career?
A: I had an exhibition of a body of watercolors in New York City at Phillips Auction House. My paintings were also included in exhibitions with modern masters, my heroes. Also when a painting of mine is placed in a public collection, or a museum, or in a noteworthy private collection, there is certainly the feeling of being acknowledged.
What stands out is when my paintings are well curated and my vision is cared for. This is why I joined Nüart Gallery. The walls are vibrating!
Q: Anything else you’d like to share.
A: I work in a way to honor consistency and quietude. What I need, and what the world needs is a load-stone that orients people towards what has staying power. I offer space, reflection and contemplation.
More about Nüart Gallery, Canyon road
Santa Fe is the largest art market in the United States after New York, and per-capita, the largest art market in the world. Collectors come from around the world to experience the deep concentration of galleries on Canyon Road and the unique cultural atmosphere in Santa Fe. However, just beyond the stretch of galleries as well as within our own gallery space, which housed Gormley’s Market until the 1980s, the evidence of Santa Fe’s living history remains; History coexists with the contemporary. (See Santa Fe Modern)
Established at the beginning of the 21st Century, Nüart Gallery’s mission has always been to show the work of the very best artists we know. Our collectors value our discernment and know that we travel the world to bring them the very best in contemporary art.
Great art often exists outside of constrained historical contexts, possessing lasting and impressionable depth and value. It is humbling and rewarding to be involved in these artistic processes, working amongst talented artists, and to be able to share the art.
