70 Years of Abstract Painting – Excerpts presents a wide range of paintings on canvas through a spectrum of history. The show functions as a historical survey while at the same time a playful new vantage point. The eclectic mix derived from seven decades-worth of work initiates an unusual dialogue between historic and contemporary works. Furthermore, modern and post-modern influences and concerns are addressed. 70 Years of Abstract Painting – Excerpts assembles works by a selection of modern and contemporary painters, including Josef Albers, Hans Hofmann and Jackson Pollock.

The exhibition aims to initiate an unusual dialogue between modern and post-modern concerns. Jason McCoy Gallery states, “It is our ambition to stress the timelessness of the abstract language in painting and to create a platform, which allows older works to appear in a new light and contemporary compositions to be viewed in the context of their influences.”

Abstract Painting

Traced back to its Roman origins, the word ‘abstract’ means literally to ‘drag’ or ‘draw’ something away. Its etymological root in Latin is quite forceful,  not gentle diversion or digression but a purposeful motion of distancing and detaching, extraction and relocation. Abstract art was not quietly ushered through the back door of history. Instead it was proclaimed, loud and true, by countless parties and offered up in a wealth of guises by artists approaching abstraction from a great variety of perspectives.
